Wow! Very clear and neat. You're doing wonderfully well Ma'am.
Thank you!
Hi Belinda, can you tell me please, how often to do wash the Plexiglass plate - like do you wash it after every print, or do you just re-ink it? Thanks.
Hi Kath, If I am in the midst of printing an edition, I just re-ink and wipe and then print over and over again, unless I’m changing colors from - say, black ink to green ink, or if I’m finished with the printing, and then I use a soft tooth brush and drop of dawn dish soap on the plate, with no water at first, to gently scrub the ink out of the incised grooves. Then rinse the plate, the toothbrush and my hands in warm water. Dry and store the plate after confirming that all the ink has been removed. Happy printing!
Glad this video came to me in my searches; I didn't think to add MagMix to my ink. Now, I should be able to print great prints. I am using the Akua pin press and also have a hand brayer. Thanks!
Hi Scott, I’m so glad you found the demonstration helpful! I use MagMix all the time, and I wish more printmakers knew about it for adjusting thickness and viscosity in their Akua inks! Happy printing to you!
Thank you for answering this question for me - "can I use a plexi etch to add detail to a paper that has been previously printed as the last step in a multi block multi plexi print ?" I now feel confident for my up coming experiment after seeing this video, and I'm so pleased that you anticipated my question 9 years ago. Thank you very much !
Hi James - I’m glad the details were pertinent to your printmaking project, and I hope your drypoint/etch details make your print project sing! Happy printing to you!
Thank you!
You’re welcome, Bernadette! Have fun experimenting!
Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! Happy printing!
Can’t this technique work with solid flat shape like Matisse cutouts. I don’t have a press. Wonderful demo.
Hi Caro - you mean hand-transferring a relief print? If so, yes, folks have been printing relief style prints with nothing but a wooden spoon for decades. It’s fun and simple: ua-cam.com/video/lRy5lvrWsa0/v-deo.htmlsi=bwQdUVHQ5fplJQ1y Happy experimenting!
I've always wondered, is it not possible to use a clean brayer, instead of a baren or spoon, to transfer the image, please?
Hi Edie - yes, but only when you’ve arranged certain conditions: thin, flexible, smooth (no tooth), soaked and blotted paper, good transfer ink, and a gloss finish on your plate so the ink transfers/releases easily and adheres to the paper. DO some simple, abstract experiments to see how much ink you need to apply to your design and how much brayer pressure you’ll need against a variety of papers to note which combo works best for your ideas before you invest all sorts of time manipulating the perfect monotype image.
@@bdelpesco Thank you so much! 🤗
What a beautiful method. Thank you!
Thanks for the compliment, @pictureel5863 ! Happy experimenting!
Have you ever used the Intaglio Water-Based Ink, Opaque White I am trying to figure out if I want to do a print on black paper if the ink has sufficient opacity to overcome the black or darker paper. For example I am trying to use a white line on a black paper instead of a black line on white paper.
Hi Romel, I don't like water-based inks, but I love water-wash-up inks. My preferred brands are Akua and Caligo Safewash. If you use Akua, be sure your black paper has *no* sizing in it, or the ink will not dry. The opacity of the inks are great.
@@bdelpesco Thanks for the response and efforts. Any particular reason for not liking water based inks? My assumption is that the water based intaglio/etchings ink tends to move if watercolor is placed above them. When referring to Caligo Safewash are your referring to Caligo Safe Wash Etching Ink? For Akua I am only seeing their Intaglio Water-Based Ink when I search , are you referring to another type of Akua ink?.
@romelmadrayart Hi Romel - water based inks re-wet when you add any wet media - making mud - and they dry super fast - on the plate and on the slab, so printing an edition is challenging. Water-WASHABLE inks are not water based - Akua is soy oil based, and Caligo is linseed oil based, so pay close attention to how the term water is used in the marketing verbiage. Both Akua and Caligo are formulated to wash up/clean with water. Akua dries via *absorption* into the paper, so any good printmaking paper works beautifully. Caligo *air dries*, slowly, so you have time to roll out your color on the slab, or the plate, and print your edition. And yes, I’m referring to Caligo Safewash etching and relief inks - both are amazing, and newer to me, as well as Akua intaglio inks - which I’ve used for years.
So, if you make more than one print from the same plate but finish them with different mediums, how would you number them? Would they each be considered a 'one of' or would you call them a series or what? Thanks for sharing, I'm enjoying the videos...it's been a long time since I made prints.
Hi Susan, There are many opinions about how to mark prints with variations. I would mark each print with the title, my signature, the print number, edition size and e.v. for "edition varies". 🙌
I'm enjoying watching the tutorials especially the ones not using a press as I have hurt my shoulder at the moment and can't work my own press for the time being.
Thanks for the feedback. I hope you heal fast and get back to your press soon.
do u still need a printing press to print this from a cardboard?
Hello, Alice - a press makes the job faster, and more thorough, but you can still get a good print with a spoon, especially if you keep your lifework relatively simple. Watch this demo: ua-cam.com/video/86nRWW4PV9M/v-deo.htmlsi=o0TLFQ91JyZxqmhF
Great video thanks
Thanks for the feedback, Maggie! 🌺
This is wonderfully helpful! Thanks so much.
I’m so glad you found it useful! Thanks for letting me know. 🪻
Omg this was super helpful!! I recently wanted to try this and I don’t have a press either but the spoon idea is actually really a good idea! I have a question when you dampen the paper you said damped and blotted, what would that mean to blot it? And does the paper need to be print making paper or can it be something else like mixed media would it still work just as fine?
Hi Evelyn, I’m glad the monotype print demo was helpful! Printmaking paper works best, and after soaking or dipping it in water, you lay the wet sheet of paper in/on a towel folded over so you can blot both sides of the paper. You shouldn’t see any shine of moisture. Smooth your hands over the towel to push it into the paper and wick up the water, leaving the paper damp but not dripping or shiny. 👍🏽
Have a look at this video which shows some soaking and blotting of prints to add more layers: ua-cam.com/video/ViihrZhdxCs/v-deo.htmlsi=fVJTaeyxmaOOtFGy
@@bdelpesco thank you so much!!

If you’re looking for the paper yield templates I referenced in this video, you can collect them in this post: www.belindadelpesco.com/tearing-full-sheets-of-fine-art-paper-to-smaller-sizes.html/
This was so helpful Belinda. Thank you for your blog and this youtube posting!
Hi Bill - I’m glad it was helpful! I hope your volume of smaller sizes and your edges are all satisfying!
I enjoy the tearing process and I've yet to create a full edition of prints with a new(old) press that is an ongoing enjoyment of learning. As I continue to learn I realize how your templates will save time and eliminate the need for any paper waste. The small tabs tip for picking up paper with messy hand is great. PS... thanks also for the link on how paper is made. Paper is such a gift.
Hi Bill, I hope your exploration of the new/old press and paper tearing to prep for an edition moves you to complete one. It’s incredibly satisfying to print, dry, sort and number your prints as a complete edition. And yes, paper is such a gift. And so many kinds to try. Happy printing to you.
You gave me some great ideas, tx
Hi Gmom - have fun with your printmaking adventures!
Your video was very helpful and thank you for creating it and the download. I've missed your printmaking videos and really enjoy your easy style of teaching. You are very thorough in explaining. I had been mono printing and enjoying it, and loved your method on the trace monotypes. You make it look so effortless. A friend bought me a geli plate and have tried it, but seem to enjoy a hard surface better. Thank you for your expertise. 😊
Thanks for your kind words and encouragement! I appreciate your feedback.
Nice video and a great idea with the reference drawings! I do have a suggestion, however: For the 7-sheet template, I believe you could convert that 2 x 12 waste strip into a third 4 x 6 sheet by rotating all 12 x 14 and 10 x 8 pieces by 90 degrees, in their current relative positions. Besides yielding an additional 4 x 6 and reducing waste, I believe you'd also need to make one less tear (from 8 tears down to 7, if my counting is correct).
Great idea! I will add your measurements to that template and see if it works. I have at least 8 templates so far, and I’m always eager to add another or alter what I’ve got to get higher yield. 👍🏽
Loved your great video. I want to subscribe but don’t see where I can do that.
Hi Edith - when you’re watching the video, there is a red UA-cam button on the video screen in the lower right corner. Click that to subscribe. 😻

What if you want a painting a different ratio and standard printer paper?
Hi Virginia, can you give an example of what you’re asking?
Spritzing the paper with water is gamechanging for me. Do you repeat it for each layer, or do you only do it for the first layer?
Hello Five - I’m glad the spritzing is making good strides for you. I do spritz for each layer of added color. I think the success on that will depend on each printmaker’s choice of paper and ink, so test the results on your proof prints before applying the practice on your edition prints. 👍🏽
Loved this !
Thanks for the feedback, CJ... happy printing!
Do I need special inks or can I use Golden acrylic ink for painting or gelliplating?
Hi Barbara, If you’re doing gelli plate printmaking, you can use acrylic paint, or Akua inks. If you’re doing collagraph printmaking, I’d recommend staying with printmaking ink - either Akua intaglio, or traditional oil based printmaking ink (Daniel Smith, Graphic Chemical or Hawthorn, etc.) Happy experimenting!
Bonjour Comment faites vous vos « éponges « pour étaler l encre ?
Bonjour, Cathy. Vous verrez quelques photos des applicateurs en feutre dans cet article de blog: www.belindadelpesco.com/collagraph-tutorial.html/
Thanks!
Thank you, Shane!
Lovely video. Can you use other implements to etch with or must you use an etching needle. Also can you use a baren or a pile of books on the plate for printing ... i dont have a printing press.
Hello Lucretia, You can indeed use other tools to engrave the plexiglass… a sewing needle taped to a chop stick, a twisted scribe, a tungsten carbid engraving pen (like this: General Tools Tungsten Carbide Scribe a.co/d/hGkG11K ) . Transferring the print from the plexiglass to the paper is much easier and more successful when done on a press, but the back of a metal spoon used as a baren will work as long as you keep your paper-to-plate contact free of any movement. If the paper scoots across the plate at all, you’ll get all sorts of staggered lines, and a heap of frustration. Good luck with your experiments!
Can watercolor paper or canva paper be used?
Yes you can! I would recommend experimenting with a series of abstract mark making on a set of various paper swatches to see which ones suit you best before diving into a more refined image. It’s fun and informative to test papers this way.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, it was the best I have watched, and believe me I have watched a ton. I wish I could draw, but alas I can not. I spend so much time trying to draw the image and then get frustrated because I just can not do! I end up walking away from the drawing and the painting, feeling like a failure. I am still going to feel like a failure, because I can't draw, but with your method, I will be able to get to the painting. Thank you, suzie
Hi Suzie, You can do it! No one knows how to draw till they practice, so I applaud you’re approach to Keep Trying. This grid method is my Go-To drawing approach. I was gridding a scene just last night. Once you get the feel for it, your drawings will get better and better. Have faith, and have courage. I’m rooting for you!
